The realms of religious and spiritual paradigms and thought are cluttered with holier than though claims of superiority and grandeur. Proclamations and iron clad guarantees about what constitutes truth, and in the context of their competitors, untruth. The theosophical debates are so incessant and so constant it inevitably leads to many people looking at what they believe and why they believed it in the first place.
Its clear to see that a bulk of people do not know or comprehend the variation between that which is 'believed' to be true, and that which is 'known' to be true. A belief of course is handed down opinion and sometimes myth from alleged historical events or happenings; it can be reasoned then quite simply that a belief is a handed down story of history and seen through the eyes and experience of others. The latter concerns direct experience.
For the larger part of modern human existence, religion and ritual has been accepted as the truth or right way of living. In many societies it has been essential and indeed functional enough in helping groups of people to live unitedly and survive. However any fundamental approach in life whether it be religious or anything for that matter, is limited and needs to develop further. Incumbent paradigms have always been challenged by new thought and methods of seeing things.
The difference that has arisen over the last two thousand years in the traditional Roman Catholic Church is a good example of how others have wanted to redefine thought and religious practice. We also witness it with the continued ongoing confrontation between major religious fundamentalists around the world. Further complications arise when we see religious factions within major religions proclaim they are representing their faith or belief system yet seem to oppose the fundamental premise of the doctrine concerned. Complications materialize when the truth ultimately gets diluted with the need to be right and holy.
The commodity that is called truth then, if redesigned or assuaged to the strongest or most influential, isn't therefore fundamentally the truth is it? There still remains to this day a continued drive by many incumbent powers that be to maintain their prominent position in being the espousers of truth.
What position does this lead us to? Do we see this as an opportunity to go away from these flawed fundamental approaches, or do we simply assume the revised assumptions by the powers that be? To not have all the facts and to be aware of that is a good place to start. To begin to be aware of the facts is a further progression to finding what it is that is truth for you.
In a world so caught up in finding the 'truth' we often fail to see the intrinsic value of finding the 'un
-truth'. We need to go through life with the attitude to being open to possibilities and to discovering new ways of thinking.
Safety mechanisms are generally present in a lot of incumbent systems and religions that forbid anyone to question their authenticity or mandate to the truth. They are indeed fortresses of thought that are penetrated by the relative few. Their survival and continued relevance depend upon it. Some of the most hideous and indeed inhumane events in human history have happened as a result of this.
Unfortunately these protective mechanisms and this unhealthy need to hold power and hold over what is considered to be truth, continues to restrain and hold back humanity from its fullest potential.
The irony then is that with so many leaders on our planet we have so little leadership in these areas. Until the day that we can honestly and coherently discuss
spirituality and religious matters with a more inclusive and appreciative approach for all concerned, we will continue to languish in the depths of ego based paradigms that continue to hold us back individually and as a species.
